Reflection-on-action, while not necessarily defined as such is generally discussed as reflection after the action. In the research I did for a paper some years ago (Andrew et al. , 2002) when describing reflection in their practice most people referred to reflection-on-action as retrospective, with only one person talking about reflection as part of planning.

As he tries to make sense of it, he also reflects on the understandings which have been implicit in his action, understandings which he surfaces Reflection-in-action is when a teacher is constantly reflecting on what they are doing in the classroom, whether it be teaching or even the setup of the classroom. Teachers are able to change their lessons, when they see needed, based on reflection-in-action. However, there is a tendency to focus on reflection-on-action (see below).
